The artist studied from 1945 to 1948 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and then, from 1950 to 1952, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Kalinowski became famous for his abstract paintings-objects, sculptures and reliefs. The artist's preferred material was leather. He also created in wood and metal, which materials he often combined with leather. His works are in the collections of institutions such as the Pompidou Center and New York's MoMA.
